The Taste of Power

“Did the horsemen set up their shield or not yet?” I asked as Rupert flew at top speed.

“Not fully,” Rupert answered. “They started the process by releasing their auras, but Earth won’t be fully protected until all their auras have met and formed one shield. There are still spots for the Patonian scouts to break through.”

“How long until the shield is complete.”

“An hour or so.” It was Ra who answered, his voice coming through Rupert’s coms. “I detected four scouts entering the Earth’s atmosphere above Moscow.”

“They shouldn’t have skipped by you, Ra,” Rupert replied.

“Now is not the time for blame,” I quickly interjected. “First we stop them, then we deal with whose fault it is.”

“We are forty minutes away,” Rupert added. “I can already sense them on my internal radar.”

“Alright, then, are you ready?” I asked as I opened the cockpit to step outside the jet.

“This is not my first fight,” Rupert answered. “The question is, are you? Can you recall your training?”

I smiled, saying nothing as I stood on the Jet’s nose. I waited until I was able to see the four scouts.

“Is that them, or are those their ships?” I asked, my gaze focused on the enemy approaching us. The four looked nearly identical, only differing in size with the smallest appearing to be as large as Rupert. They had what seemed to be a metal wing on top of a squid face. Their eyes were large and round with a yellow light shining from inside, matching the several spotted lights that filled the location of their mouth. Out of their face, which seemed to encompass their entire body, except for the wings, eight octopus-like tentacles spread out, dark-colored like the rest of their bodies. Above their eyes and out of their two wings, three chimney-like protrusions released white smoke, giving the aliens a mixture of mechanical and biological feel.

“That is them,” Rupert said, “in their true Patonian form.”

“Anything I need to know about them?” I retrieved my sword from my back.

“They are not dead until they have exploded.”

“Got it.” I lowered to my knees before jumping off Rupert toward the scout nearest us.

Once I was in the air, Rupert immediately fired missiles at the aliens. The scouts began maneuvering, flying in a random pattern, avoiding the attacks. It was a smart move from Rupert as it allowed me to land on the scout I aimed for while their focus remained on him. I instantly pierced my sword into the alien’s body, and ran on top of it, splitting its face and body in half. As I reached the end, I saw sparks scatter around and immediately jumped as far as I could without a target to fall on. Halfway through my leap, the alien exploded, with its after mass knocking me further into the atmosphere.

Falling, but still high in the sky, I saw the Patonians using their speed to circle Rupert, trying to trap him in the middle, firing what looked like laser bullets like a machine gun out of the yellow spots filling their faces.
